The electric version of the Mercedes-Benz GLB-Class, the EQB model, has had a surprisingly short lifespan. Due to using the older MFA platform, which dates back to 2011, the electric SUV will become history after the 2025 model year.
Confirmation from Mercedes
The news was confirmed by a company spokesperson, who told InsideEVs that the EQB “has reached the end of its planned life cycle and will therefore not be offered after the 2025 model year.” He went on to emphasize: “Mercedes-Benz remains fully committed to electrification, and the biggest product offensive in the brand’s history is just around the corner. As announced at IAA Mobility 2023, Mercedes-Benz will also present two SUVs based on this new architecture.”
The heir is on the way.
It’s clear that a replacement for the EQB is coming, and it’s expected to be more expensive than the outgoing model. EPA estimates for the EQB range on a single charge range between 205 and 250 miles, depending on equipment like all-wheel drive and wheel size.
One of the few with seven seats
Although the GLB-Class has been on the market for years, the electric EQB wasn’t introduced until the 2021 model year. It was one of only two electric models from Mercedes to offer the option of a third row of seats. With its shutdown, the only option for an electric seven-seat Mercedes remains the significantly more expensive EQS model.
New platform brings progress
Future models, including two new SUVs, will be based on the latest MMA platform, designed for hybrid and fully electric drives. This architecture, already seen on the redesigned CLA, brings significant improvements such as 800-volt technology for faster charging and an advanced operating system.
Although the exact arrival date of the successor is not yet known, the announcement of the EQB model’s discontinuation suggests that we won’t have to wait long for its successor.
